This simple tomato sauce recipe is one we have made hundreds of times throughout the years, but never thought to write down. It is one of those recipes born out of necessity. You know the feeling: it is 5 PM, there is no dinner plan, you need something fast that everyone will actually eat, and you definitely do not have three hours to spare.

We always have these ingredients on hand, so this simple tomato sauce became our go-to answer. And here is the thing about this sauce: not only is it fast and easy, it is genuinely delicious. Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best ones.

Why Simple Recipes Demand Quality Ingredients

When a recipe has only five ingredients, every single one matters. There is nowhere for mediocre ingredients to hide. This is not the time to reach for whatever canned tomatoes are on sale or that garlic powder lurking in the back of your spice cabinet.

For this sauce to shine, invest in quality ingredients. It makes all the difference between a sauce that tastes homemade and one that tastes like it came from a jar.

Our Favorite Ingredients for the Best Tomato Sauce

Tomatoes: We prefer Mutti or Cento brand canned tomatoes. Both are San Marzano style tomatoes that have a naturally sweet, less acidic flavor. You can use whole tomatoes and crush them yourself, or start with crushed tomatoes for convenience. Whole tomatoes often have better flavor since they are picked at peak ripeness, but crushed works perfectly when you are short on time.

Garlic: Always use fresh garlic, never jarred or powdered. Two large cloves minced will give you that aromatic backbone every good tomato sauce needs. If you love garlic as much as we do, add an extra clove.

Olive Oil: Use a good quality extra virgin olive oil. Partanna is our favorite for its fruity, peppery flavor that complements tomatoes beautifully. The oil is the first thing to hit the pan, so its flavor permeates the entire sauce.

Salt: We use Redmond Real Salt for its ancient mineral content and clean flavor. A good quality salt enhances the natural sweetness of the tomatoes without making the sauce taste salty.

Basil: Fresh basil is non-negotiable here. Dried basil simply does not have the same bright, aromatic quality. We add half the basil while the sauce simmers to infuse flavor, then stir in the remaining fresh basil at the end for a burst of freshness.

Tips for the Best Simple Tomato Sauce

How to Crush Whole Tomatoes

If you are using whole canned tomatoes, you have options for crushing them. Mamma Silvana prefers the old-fashioned method of crushing them by hand as she adds them to the pan. There is something satisfying about feeling the tomatoes break apart in your fingers, and it gives you control over the texture.

I prefer using a mini masher right in the pot. It is quick, less messy, and gives a nice chunky texture without much effort. You can also use a potato masher or wooden spoon to break them down as they cook. Any method works, so use whatever feels right to you.

Watch Your Garlic

Garlic goes from golden and fragrant to burnt and bitter in seconds. Keep the heat at medium and stir frequently. The moment it turns light golden and smells amazing, add your tomatoes. Burnt garlic will ruin the entire sauce, so stay close to the stove during this step.

Let It Simmer

Twenty minutes of simmering allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly. Resist the urge to rush this step. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, and let the sauce do its thing. Your kitchen will smell incredible.

Simple Tomato Sauce Recipe

Yield: 4-6 servings  |  Prep Time: 5 minutes  |  Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 large garlic cloves, minced

1 (28 oz) can whole or crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped (divided)

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, warm the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until golden and fragrant, about one to two minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning.

Add the tomatoes to the pan. If using whole tomatoes, crush them by hand as you add them, or use a potato masher or wooden spoon to break them up as you stir.

Add the salt and half of the chopped basil. Stir everything together and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Turn off the heat and stir in the remaining fresh basil. Taste and adjust salt if needed.

Serve immediately over your favorite pasta, or use as a base for pizza, dipping sauce, or any recipe calling for tomato sauce.

What to Serve with Simple Tomato Sauce

This versatile sauce pairs beautifully with just about any pasta shape. We love it with our homemade gnocchi, sourdough gnocchi, gluten-free egg pasta, or sourdough egg pasta. The simplicity of the sauce lets the pasta really shine.

It also makes an excellent pizza sauce. Spread it on your favorite dough, add mozzarella and your preferred toppings, and you have a homemade pizza that rivals any pizzeria. We use this sauce for quick weeknight pizzas all the time.

For a complete Italian meal, serve your sauced pasta alongside crusty bread for dipping and a simple green salad. Keep it easy, keep it delicious.
